Twitter looks close to launching a subscription service called Twitter Blue that will cost subscribers $3 a month.
The news comes courtesy of reliable app researcher Jane Manchun Wong, who posted details of the company’s expected service at the weekend.
If you’re happy to pay a subscription fee, you’re likely to see ads banished from your feed while also getting access to a feature called Collections that will let you save particular tweets for easy viewing later.
In addition, subscribers will be able to use an “undo” function that gives you a few seconds to prevent a tweet from going out after you hit send, similar to what many email clients already offer. Such a feature would come in handy if you spot a typo at the last moment, or you suddenly fear that your tweet might inadvertently cause an unwanted Twitter storm. Wong earlier suggested that Twitter may allow users to set the length of the undo timer to between 5 and 30 seconds.
While many Twitter users have for years been crying out for an edit button, an undo feature is perhaps all that will be offered. And then, for a fee.
San Francisco-based Twitter could well bundle many more features with Twitter Blue, or even serve it up as a tiered option offering more features to those willing to pay a higher price.
Twitter hasn’t said when it will offer its subscription service to its global community of around 330 million monthly active users, but with these latest discoveries, as well as the subject featuring in discussions over the last year in several earnings calls by the company, we may hear something official about Twitter Blue pretty soon.
