Don’t File Away That Jobless Data So Fast

The number of American workers filing claims for unemployment benefits each week has long been one of the best ways to get a quick temperature check on the job market. Lately, though, the signal has been muddled. The Labor Department on Thursday reported that the number of people filing new unemployment insurance claims in the week ended this past Saturday came to a seasonally adjusted 1.5 million, following about 1.9 million a week earlier.
