If you missed Prime Day (or simply don’t have a Prime membership) but are still looking to find savings on laptops and other tech, then you’ll just have to wait for upcoming Labor Day and Black Friday sales. For now, though, we can take a look at some of the best laptop deals that were featured during Prime Day 2019 and what we expect to see for Amazon’s big annual retail event next year.
What were the best laptop deals on Prime Day?
As we’ve experienced in past years, there were a wide variety of different laptop deals this Prime Day. The most common deals were for Chromebooks, budget gaming laptops, and affordable Windows 10 laptops. These cheaper options and slightly older models will get larger discounts, which did leave a lot of outdated junk to sort through. There were, however, plenty of good deals to find if you knew what to look for.
Some of the best Prime Day laptop deals we saw during this year’s sale included high-end machines such as the MacBook Pro, HP Spectre x360, and Dell XPS 13, which were discounted at around 20% off or more. Given the recent changes in the MacBook lineup, shoppers were also able to take advantage of significant price drops on older non-Touch Bar MacBook Pros and 12-inch MacBooks as retailers used these sales to empty out some of their old stock.
As we mentioned earlier, many other outlets and retailers also ran sales of their own to compete with Prime Day. A few of the best ones we saw were from PC brands like Dell, HP, and Lenovo, with these “Black Friday in July” blowouts offering some pretty great deals on flagship laptops like the ThinkPad X1 Carbon.
What to expect from Amazon Prime Day 2020?
Laptops are hot items that deal-hungry shoppers are almost always looking for, and there are always a ton of them marked down during big sales like Prime Day. That’s a double-edged sword, as it means that while there’s almost certainly something for everyone from gamers to on-the-go professionals, there’s also a bunch of riff-raff you need to sort through to find the best deals.
For Prime Day 2019, we not only saw a plethora of laptop deals on Amazon, but some of the biggest competing mid-July sales were from PC makers. It was a very, very good season for laptop shoppers, and since Prime Day continued its trend of smashing records and attracting competition from other retailers, we anticipate that this will continue and even grow in 2020.
Deal hunters can expect to see a lot of the same laptop deals for Prime Day 2020 that we saw this year: Many last-generation models will be marked down, so you’ll have to do some sniffing around (and keep an eye on our deals page) to find the best markdowns on newer items. Gaming laptops and 2-in-1s were especially popular this year, and with Nvidia and AMD rolling out their new generation of graphics cards, we’re looking forward to next year’s gaming laptop deals to be even sweeter than the Prime Day 2019 offerings.
We also expect to see the competition continue to grow in a big way. Other outlets have taken note of Amazon’s success and are cashing in, which is great for shoppers. This will also put pressure on Amazon to continue to out-do itself each year in order to retain its market share, as Prime Day deals are exclusive to Prime members — meaning that shoppers without Amazon Prime will be increasingly able to head over to Walmart, Dell, HP, Newegg, and other online stores to find the best discounts instead.
