Julian Chokkattu/Digital TrendsWhile it may have been supplanted by the excellent iPhone 11, the iPhone XR is still a fantastic choice if you’re looking for a flagship-level iPhone for less. The iPhone XR is everything you need from an iPhone — a gorgeous bezel-less design, a powerful and snappy processor, and a solid camera — but for a couple of hundred dollars less at just $599.
While it may be more affordable, the iPhone XR’s good looks come with similar vulnerabilities to the iPhone XS and XS Max — a massive screen is beautiful, but that means there’s even more real estate to crack, and that metallic body is easy to dent. So if you’re gunning for Apple’s midsize iPhone XR, you might want to consider investing in some protection to stop your expensive new phone from sprouting cracks and chips. Here are the best iPhone XR cases to keep your baby beautiful.
Kerfcase Wooden Case
Making a case from wood may seem counter-intuitive. After all, cases are usually made from lightweight materials that absorb impact energy. Wood isn’t usually included on that list. Still, there’s no denying Kerfcase’s wooden covers cast a striking look. Each case is made from a single piece of wood and comes with an ultra-suede lining to keep your phone snug and safe. You have the choice of 14 different kinds of wood, from the cherry pictured above to the gorgeous figured Sapele. Be warned though, these beautiful cases don’t come cheap. The cherry wood is one of the cheapest, and it costs $69 — figured Sapele will set you back $169.
Spigen Tough Armor XP
Spigen is one of the best names around where phone protection is concerned, and the Tough Armor series is one of its best. For the iPhone XR, Spigen has pulled out all the stops with the Tough Armor XP. A layer of all-new foam technology has been added to the case, adding even more shock protection to an already strong case. A dual-layer construction uses soft TPU and hard polycarbonate to protect against a variety of threats, while Spigen’s Air Cushion technology further reinforces protection for the corners of your device. There’s even a kickstand on the back. It adds a little bit of extra thickness to your iPhone XR, but if you want something a bit hardier, then the Tough Armor XP is a great call — especially for just $18.
UAG Plyo Series
Urban Armor Gear (UAG) is a pretty big name in protection, offering cases that meet military drop standards (MIL-STD 810G 516.6) for protection against drops, scratches, and other hazards. But it’s the design that really helps UAG stand out from the crowd. The Plyo’s sleek design is one of UAG’s more subtle entries, but it’s no less eye-catching. It’s made from an armor shell paired with an impact-resistant softcore, and the corners have been reinforced with air-soft cushions. It protects the screen with raised edges and your device’s buttons with oversized button covers. It’s expensive though.
Tech21 Pure Print Liberty Prunella
Many cases can be a little bare where design is concerned — not so with the Pure Print Liberty Prunella case from Tech21. It’s made from Tech21’s Bulletshield material, which absorbs energy from drops, bumps, and shocks. It’s so good that Tech 21 claims it’s damage-proof against drops from up to 3 meters high (10 feet). Despite this protection, it’s also extremely thin and barely adds any bulk to your phone. But it’s the beautiful print that really catches your eye. It uses morning glories, chrysanthemums, and roses to create a cluster of Asian-inspired florals. It’s a beautiful case, but keep in mind that you’ll have to pay top dollar for it. There are other designs available too if this one doesn’t catch your eye.
Vaja Grip Leather Case
The iPhone XR is made from premium materials, but there’s no material that can match leather for true luxury. Vaja specializes in crafting high-end protective cases made from only the most premium of materials. Vaja’s Grip case is made from a polycarbonate shell that’s wrapped in your choice of quality Argentine leather — either vegetable-tanned bridge leather or all-weather Floater leather — and your choice of style and color. These cases are built to last, and they’ll protect your device too. If you want more comprehensive protection, look elsewhere, but if you’re looking for everyday protection with style and don’t mind paying a little extra, then Vaja is a great choice.
Moment Photo Wallet Case
The iPhone XR may be the only 2018 iPhone still packing a single-lens camera, but it’s impressive nonetheless. If you love your phone’s camera skills, supercharge it with a Moment case. It’s made from premium Horween leather, comes with an integrated backpack that holds up to three cards at once, and even has a wrist-strap attachment point. It’s stylish and protective, but the real draw is the ability to attach Moment’s new range of lenses that allow for wide-angle, zoom, and macro shots, among many other things. Both the case and the lenses are expensive, so this is definitely an investment. But if you’re willing to splash the cash, this is a worthy bodyguard for your iPhone XR.
Apple Clear Case
If you purchased the iPhone XR, there’s a good chance you’d like to show off its unique color. While Apple does not typically make clear cases, it made an exception for its multicolored flagship. Nearly invisible on your phone, the iPhone XR Clear Case is constructed of a thick polycarbonate with flexible TPU materials. It slides on easily but will provide you with protection from scratches and drops. Though it’s durable enough to protect your new iPhone, it’s not bulky enough to block the wireless charging coil.
Catalyst Impact Protection Case
Looking to protect your new iPhone XR without hiding it? Catalyst’s Impact Protection Case may be perfect. This case has a translucent back that lets you see your gorgeous new phone and protects it from debris. There’s a rubber bumper with a front-facing lip that protects the phone from drops up to almost 10 feet. And while the Catalyst Impact Protection Case will protect your iPhone XR from accidental drops, it’s still thin enough to support Qi wireless charging.
Otterbox Commuter Series
Protection is exceptionally important, but it doesn’t mean much if you can’t fit your phone in your pocket when you need to. Otterbox‘s Commuter Series is crafted to sidestep that problem. Made from a dual-layer system of shock-absorbing TPU and hard polycarbonate (PC), the Commuter is all the protection you’d expect from Otterbox, with a slim profile that’s easy to slip in and out of a pocket. It’s exceptionally protective, thanks to the two durable materials, but Otterbox takes it a step further with port covers that keep out dust, and the addition of non-slip grippy sides that help you to keep hold of your phone. Like most Otterbox cases it’s not cheap — but it’s some of the best protection you can buy.
Looking for a slim case that’s also packed with cool features? Look no further than Moshi‘s Capto case. It comes with good protection for a slim case, using a hard shell to provide military-grade MIL-STD-810G protection against drops, as well as a raised bezel to protect the device when laid down. But the real magic comes from the strap on the back. When not in use, it clips to the back of the case, holding flat against your phone. But give it a tug and you can wrap it around your finger, using it to keep a tight hold of your iPhone and avoid dropping it. You can also clip it into place as a kickstand for watching your favorite media on the go. With additional utilities but no added bulk, the Capto is a great way to protect your slim iPhone XR.
Nomad Rugged Case
Nomad’s Rugged Case consistently makes our list of favorite cases because it’s both rugged and refined. The case is constructed of high-grade polycarbonate and trimmed with Horween leather. This case made to withstand the rigors of everyday living, developing a gorgeous patina as it ages. Even though it’s meant to withstand drops up to six feet, the Nomad Rugged Case is remarkably thin and fits the new iPhone XR like a glove.
Incipio Reprieve Sport
Incipio is well known for making solid protective cases, so it means a lot when Incipio says this is its most protective case. But despite that accolade, it’s a fairly subtle case. A clear polycarbonate back allows your phone’s style to shine through, while still keeping it protected. The outside is ringed with a tough but flexible TPU bumper that will help absorb shocks from falls. There are reinforcements at every corner, further bolstering the areas most likely to hit the ground first during a fall, and it’s been drop-tested up to 12 feet. It’s ideal for people who might be a bit accident-prone, and who want protection without losing their phone’s style.
Mous Limitless 2.0
Being slim and stylish, you might expect that Mous‘s Limitless 2.0 case isn’t as defensive as larger, bulkier cases can be. But Mous has leveraged some pretty awesome technology to craft the protective and good looking Limitless 2.0. and claims that the case will provide solid drop protection. It’s made from a material called Aeroshock; Mous’s cases are injected with micro-crystals that expand into micro-pockets of air when subjected to high temperatures. These pockets of air form thousands of tiny airbags within the case, minimizing the shock caused by impacts by dissipating energy within the case. The back panels are made from real materials, including bamboo, carbon fiber, and real shell. It might seem like it’s on the expensive side, but the Limitless 2.0 case is worth the outlay.
The iPhone XR has an impressive IP67-rating for dust and water-resistance, but you still don’t really want your phone to get wet. So if you know your phone is going to come in regular contact with water, consider investing in a completely waterproof Lifeproof case. The Fre’s résumé is certainly impressive — Lifeproof claims it’s protective against drops from up to 2 meters; completely sealed against water, dust, snow and more (even the ports and speakers are fully sealed); and offers 360-degree protection with a built-in screen protector. It’ll protect your phone against immersion in up to two meters of water for up to an hour. It’s not the cheapest case around — but it’s less expensive than a new phone.
The Olixar ArmaRing is a tough case that isn’t afraid to show it off. It’s made from two distinct layers that add to the case’s toughness. The first layer is a soft and absorbent TPU core that wraps around the phone, adding grip and excellent resistance against drops and bumps. The second is a hard polycarbonate (PC) shell that clips over the top, providing a rigid backbone that helps to resist other damage. But that’s not all — the back of the ArmaRing contains a ring that can be folded out. You can either loop a finger through for extra grip, or use it as a handy kickstand. It’s tough, has its own rugged style, and you can’t argue with that price.
This case isn’t just thin — it’s Totallee thin! Awful jokes aside, this is a very good case to keep your iPhone XR safe if you want slim protection to see off a variety of everyday threats. Totallee’s thin case is just 0.02 mm thick, weighs 0.1 ounces, and is completely branding free for that minimalist look. It’s not going to be as good at protecting against drops as other specialized cases, but it does offer excellent scratch-protection, as well as additional grip. There’s a raised lip around the camera to keep your lens safe, and it comes in multiple varieties. Leather offers sophistication, the glossy finish gives a minimal sheen, and matte allows Apple’s logo to shine through, loud and proud. Good all-round, fuss-free protection.
Snakehive Leather Wallet
Looking for sleek executive chic? Look no further than this wallet case from Snakehive. It’s made from European full-grain cowhide nubuck leather, so you can be sure you’re getting the real deal. Your phone is held in place by a plastic shell inside the leather, while the inner lining of the case is made from soft leather that won’t scratch or damage your phone’s screen. It folds all the way around your phone, ensuring full protection when not in use, and the inner lining also comes with space for up to three credit cards or some spare cash, enabling you to leave your wallet at home. Since this is real leather, your case won’t look exactly like the one in the picture — but it’ll develop its own patina as it ages, adding to its unique style.
PureGear Dualtek Clear
Craving a bit of protection without hiding your vibrant new iPhone? You’ll want to check out the PureGear Dualtek Clear case. In addition to its clear back, the Dualtek case also has a protective rubber bumper with built-in corner protection for hard drops. On the sides, you’ll find ergonomic grips to keep the phone from sliding out of your hand. At $35, the Dualtek case does a good job of protecting your investment without breaking your wallet.
Case-Mate Karat Mother of Pearl
Who needs minimalist and subtle style when you can have a case that’s literally covered in bits of pearl? If you can’t get enough loud style, then Case-Mate’s Karat series is perfect for you. It’s made from genuine materials encased in clear resin, to ensure that your shine never wears off or gets obscured. And it’s more protective than you’d think, with drop protection tested up to ten feet, and flexible sides that aid grip. It’s nicely finished, with metallic buttons and anti-scratch technology — and it comes with a lifetime warranty. It’s one of the pricier cases on this list, but with bold good looks and excellent protection, it’s still a good choice.
Smartish Wallet Slayer Vol. 2
Wallet cases are great, but not every wallet case also has to be a folding folio. Smartish’s Wallet Slayer Vol. 2 isn’t a folio case, but it does function as a wallet thanks to the stylish “backpack” on the case’s rear that can carry up to three payment cards or spare cash. It’s still thin, despite that addition, and it’s made from a tough material that should last your iPhone XR’s lifespan. The Wallet Slayer Vol. 2 comes with extra-grippy sides, and also comes with a slot parallel to the cardholder that functions as a kickstand. Just insert any credit card, and it’ll hold your phone in landscape — perfect for viewing on the go. Airbags in each corner help to resist drops, and a free screen protector completes the protection.
